நவீன தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தில் ஆர்வம் உள்ளவர்களுக்கான அழைப்பிதழ் இது. தமிழுக்கு 2000 வருடத்துக்கு மேற்பட்ட இலக்கிய பாரம்பரியம் இருப்பதும், அதே வேளையில் அந்தந்த காலங்களில் உருவாக்கப்பட்ட இலக்கியங்களை நாம் இன்று ரசிக்க முடிவதும் அனைவரும் அறிந்ததே.

ஆனால் தொடர்ந்து மாறிவரும் இன்றைய காலத்தில் நமது நவீன தமிழ் இலக்கியம் பற்றிய அறிவும், அதனை ரசிக்கும் ரசனையும் இல்லாமல் இருப்பதும் நாம் பார்ப்பதுதான். எனவே ஒரு சில அமெரிக்கத் தமிழர்கள் இணைந்து இது பற்றி விவாதித்து ஒரு அமைப்பை உருவாக்கவும் முனைந்தார்கள்.

இதனை நோக்கிய வேலைகளாக கீழ்க்கண்டவை குறிக்கப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன

1) முன்னோடியாக இருந்து நவீன தமிழ் இலக்கியத்துக்கு பங்காற்றியவர்களுக்கு பணமுடிப்பு தந்து கெளரவிப்பது

2) அமெரிக்க இலக்கியவாதிகளுக்கும் தமிழ் இலக்கியவாதிகளுக்கும் பாலமாக இருந்து தமிழ் இலக்கியங்களை ஆங்கிலத்துக்கு கொண்டுவருவதற்கும், ஆங்கில இலக்கியங்களை தமிழுக்கு கொண்டுவருவதற்கும் ஊக்குவிப்பது.

3) நவீன தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தை ஆதாரமாகக் கொண்டுள்ள தமிழ்ப் பத்திரிக்கைகளை பிரபலப்படுத்துவது

4) கவிஞர்களுக்கும், எழுத்தாளர்களுக்கும், வாசகர்களுக்கும் தொடர்பேற்படுத்தும் இலக்கிய சந்திப்புகளை நடத்துவது

5) காலாண்டு இதழ் நடத்த முனைவது

6) விளக்குக்காக ஒரு தனி இணைய இதழ் நடத்துவது

10 நபர்களுடன் இது தொடங்கப்பட்டது. இன்று மேலும் ஆர்வமுள்ள தமிழார்வர்கள் இணைந்துள்ளார்கள்.

நல்ல ஆரம்பமாக இருக்கும் பொருட்டு நவீனத் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்துக்கு முன்னோடியாக உழைத்த எழுத்தாளர்களை கெளரவிக்க புதுமைப்பித்தன் பெயரில் ஒரு பணப்பரிசை வழங்க ஆரம்பித்திருக்கிறோம். ஐந்து பிரபலமான நவீன தமிழறிஞர்கள், நடுவர் குழுவில் இருந்து அடையாளம் கண்டு கீழ்க்கண்ட எழுத்தாளர்களை கெளரவித்திருக்கிறோம்.

1) எழுத்து பத்திரிக்கையை உருவாக்கியவரும், அதன் ஆசிரியராக இருந்து புதுக்கவிதை இயக்கத்தை தோற்றுவித்தவரும், சிறுபத்திரிக்கை இயக்கத்தை தோற்றுவித்தவருமான சி.சு. செல்லப்பா அவர்கள்

2) மிகப்பெரும் கற்பனாவாதியும், மிகச்சிறந்த கவிஞரும், தமிழ் இலக்கியத்தை தொடாத உயரங்களை தொடவைத்தவரும், மிகச்சிறந்த விமர்சகருமான பிரமிள் அவர்கள்

3) சுதந்திர மார்க்ஸிஸ்ட்டாக இருந்து, கட்சி கோட்பாடுகளில் முழுகிப்போகாமல், நவீனத் தமிழ் இலக்கியத்துக்கு புதிய பார்வைகளை கொணர்ந்த கோவை ஞானி அவர்கள்

4) நவீன போக்குகளையும் நவீன சோதனை முயற்சிகளையும் மேற்கொண்டு தமிழ் இலக்கியத்துக்கு பெரும் பங்களிப்பு செய்த நகுலன் அவர்கள்.

நவீன தமிழ் இலக்கியத்திலும், கலாச்சாரத்திலும் ஆர்வமுள்ள அனைவரையும் விளக்கு அமைப்பில் உறுப்பினராக அன்புடன் அழைக்கிறோம். ஒரு வருடத்திற்கான உறுப்பினர் தொகை 100 டாலர் மட்டுமே. இருப்பினும் எந்தப் பங்கையும் மறுக்க மாட்டோம்.

சங்க இலக்கியத்தை காப்பாற்றிக்கொடுத்த மாபெரும் மன்னன் உக்கிரப் பெருவழுதியால் (ca. 300 BC -300 AD) நாங்கள் வழிநடத்தப்படுகிறோம். ஆயிரம் உணவுச்சாலைகளைவிட ஒரு மனிதனை படித்தவனாக்குவது சிறந்த செயல் என்னும் பாரதியின் வழிநடத்தலை ஏற்கிறோம்.

உங்கள் வருமான வரி விலக்கு பெரும் அன்பளிப்புகளையும் வருட உறுப்பினர் தொகையையும் விளக்கு என்ற அமைப்பு பெயருக்கு காசோலைகளாக அனுப்பும்படி கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம்.

This is an appeal to those who are interested in creative literature, and especially modern Tamil literature. It is a known fact that Tamil language has a continuous literary tradition of more than 2300 years and we are able to enjoy and appreciate poetry composed during various epochs of this long history.

However, there is a general lack of appreciation for and poor recognition of modern Tamil literature in this era of technology and fast changes. A few of the Tamil Americans have come together to do something about this and have embarked upon starting their work with the following:

Establish cash prizes to recognize pioneering work in modern Tamil literature.

Create mutual awareness between American and Tamil literati by encouraging two way translations of noteworthy pieces of literature.

Popularize magazines of modern Tamil literature.

Arrange literary meets to have first hand interaction with poets and writers.

Publish quarterly newsletter carrying literary news from all over the world.

Create and maintain a website that will carry the newsletter as well as links to the world of poetry and creative writing.

We have launched this foundation just recently, with about 10 founder members. We have started with the modest aim of recognizing a pioneer in modern Tamil every year. The recognition will be in the form of a cash prize named after puthumaipiththan a great Tamil writer who died in poverty. Five modern Tamil scholars will form a panel of judges to identifying the potential recipient. Those already recognised in this manner are :

the pioneer of Modern Tamil Literature, who as editor of the little magazine ‘Ezhuthu ‘ inspired the New Verse movemnet and the movement of uncompromising little magazines C. S. Chelllappa

Piramil , who as an imagist poet and an uncompromising critic took Tamil language to new heights of modernity

Kovai Gnani , who as an independent Marxist thinker spurned the rigid party-line opportunism to bring fresh insights into the critical approaches to Modern Tamil Culture.

Nagulan, who experimental writings and modern outlook contributed greatly to Tamil Literature

We would like to invite those of you who are interested in Modern Tamil literatureand culture to become members. We have set theannual membership as $100 However, we would not refuse any contributions.

We are guided by the great deed of King Ukkiraperuvazhuthi who helped preserve Sangam literature (ca. 300 BC -300 AD) in which we all take pride; and by Poet Bharathi ‘s idea that making one person literate is better than building a thousand feeding-choultries.
